AFP - British Prime Minister Theresa May asked European Council President Donald Tusk on Friday (5) to postpone the Brexit date until June 30, who intended to present a proposal for a flexible extension of up to 12 months.

In a letter sent to Tusk five days before the extraordinary summit meeting that the European Union (EU) is due to hold next Wednesday (10) in Brussels, May informed that the United Kingdom wishes to postpone its exit from the bloc again.

The separation was initially scheduled for March 29, 2019, but after the British Parliament failed to approve the agreement May negotiated with Brussels, the European partners granted a little more time, until April 12, for the Prime Minister to find a solution.

The 27 EU countries have made it clear that any further delay would oblige the British to participate in the European Parliament elections, from May 23 to 26, to elect their new MEPs almost three years after the 2016 referendum in which 52% of voters voted in favor of Brexit.

Despite the situation, May, who is currently negotiating with opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in search of a consensus to lift the country out of lockdown, proposed that the extension "end on June 30, 2019".
