World Opera Indonesian terrorist Umar Patek apologized on Thursday in a Jakarta courtroom to the victims of the 2002 Bali bombing that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

"I want to personally apologize to the families of the victims, especially those of the first attack in Bali," Patek said while reading a letter he had written.

This 45-year-old Indonesian Muslim, a bomb expert, had previously apologized to the Indonesian victims of the attack, but not to the citizens of 20 other nations, including two Brazilians, who died on October 12, 2002.

Patek's trial began in February for his involvement in the terrorist act, and the sentence is expected to be announced on the 21st. The prosecution has requested a life sentence for the accused because he built the bombs used in the attack.

Defense attorney Ashludin Hatjani has requested a sentence of less than 15 years, arguing that "the bombs were almost completely assembled when he arrived in Bali."

Patek was arrested in January 2011 in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, the same city where, four months later, an elite American troop killed Osama bin Laden.
