PARIS (Reuters) - A French soldier opened fire and wounded a man armed with a knife who was trying to enter the Louvre museum in Paris carrying a suitcase, police sources said.

One source said the man was trying to enter the museum's underground store and had attacked another soldier before being shot.

Police reported that the area had been evacuated.

The Interior Ministry reported in a Twitter post that the incident was "serious".

A spokesperson for the Louvre said the museum was "closed at the moment," but did not confirm reports that the site had been evacuated.

A Reuters witness at the scene said police had cordoned off the area leading to the museum.

France has been the target of a series of attacks by Islamist militants in the last two years.
