Socorro Gomes: 'Lima Group fulfills the designs of imperialism'
The president of the World Peace Council, Socorro Gomes, sent a congratulatory message to the re-elected Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, on his electoral victory last Sunday, May 20th, while also emphasizing that the Lima Group, which did not recognize the election results, "is fulfilling the designs of imperialism."
247, with Resistance - According to Socorro Gomes, with 68% of the vote, "the Bolivarian Revolution achieved an unquestionable victory at the polls, amidst the offensive against democracy in Venezuela, sending a firm message to the reactionary and anti-patriotic forces in the country, subservient to the interests of US imperialism, confronting the aggressive foreign interference in Venezuelan affairs."
In her message, the president of the World Peace Council considers Nicolás Maduro's re-election to be an expression of the "resistance" and "unity" of the Venezuelan people.
"The World Peace Council joins the democratic forces in supporting the struggle of the Venezuelan people, in defense of their sovereignty, peace and social progress," the statement adds.
Like other social movement organizations and progressive governments, the World Peace Council "strongly repudiates" the position of the governments of the so-called Lima Group, in not recognizing the election results and threatening the Bolivarian government. The Lima Group "fulfills the designs of imperialism," says Socorro Gomes.
The document reaffirms "solidarity with the Venezuelan people and with the democratic, popular, and progressive forces in the country, the region, and the world who do not give up resisting the colonialist offensive against the nation and its people." It also welcomes both the electoral victory and "the strengthening of the nation's democratic and sovereign direction," while condemning "the aggressions and sabotage against Venezuela and the interference in its internal affairs."
