Death toll rises to 32 in Mexico after powerful earthquake.

Brazil Agency - The strong earthquake that struck Mexico early Thursday morning (8) left at least 32 dead in the south of the country – 23 in the state of Oaxaca, seven in Chiapas and two in Tabasco – according to a preliminary report from the authorities. The information is from the EFE agency.

In statements to Televisa, the governor of the state of Oaxaca, Alejandro Murat, updated the death toll in his region to 23 people.

In Juchitán de Zaragoza, on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, part of the municipal palace collapsed and many homes were affected, resulting in a death toll of 17.

In other municipalities along the Isthmus, there are reports of six deaths, including two in Huamelula and two in Ixtaltepec.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Civil Protection for the Government of Chiapas, Luis Manuel García Moreno, has raised the death toll in Chiapas from three to seven.

"Sadly, we have recorded seven deaths. Three in the municipality of San Cristóval de las Casas, two in Villaflores, one in Pijijiapan, and one in Jiquipilas," Televisa reported.

In addition, two other people, both minors, died in Tabasco as a result of the 8,2 magnitude earthquake, which had its epicenter in southeastern Mexico.

Regarding the injured, the Civil Protection coordinator, Luis Felipe Puente, indicated that the Health Department is still conducting a count in the hospitals.

In addition, the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation reported landslides on some roads and "minor damage".

In a message to the press sent from the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred), the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, said that the earthquake had a magnitude similar to that of one recorded in 1932 and was greater than the 1985 earthquake, which measured 8,1 and left thousands dead and missing in Mexico City.
