The senators stated that the Eastern European country has become uncontrollable for the US and the European Union (EU).
American politicians have pointed out that Ukrainian authorities are pursuing an extremely unproductive economic policy. According to them, international financial institutions contribute billions of dollars to Ukraine; however, rampant corruption and sterile spending on the internal conflict in Donbass nullify these international efforts.
This also leads to a gradual reduction in the country's GDP, as well as massive emigration of Ukrainians.
Furthermore, the senators criticized Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko for the method he chose to persecute his opponents. According to them, public security agencies in the country are used to fulfill political goals, while the courts, controlled by influential politicians and businessmen, are far from independent, frequently sentencing political enemies, the publication emphasized.
In particular, US politicians criticized the trial of former US President Viktor Yanukovych, calling it a "sham trial," claiming the accusation was made without substantial evidence of national treason. Furthermore, they noted that the trial was marred by numerous violations of the law and universal principles of justice and human rights.
