247 - Former ambassador and former Secretary-General of Itamaraty (Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães, analyzed President Jair Bolsonaro's trip to the United States and the concessions made to the Americans. According to him, the trip is part of an announcement of unity and alignment between the two countries.

"This visit is part of an announcement, repeatedly made by President Bolsonaro, to unite with the United States on all issues, all issues. And to seek support from the United States, it's not clear for what purpose, perhaps to increase investments, according to Paulo Guedes, which has nothing to do with it. Brazil is one of the largest recipients of foreign investment in recent years and had no alignment with the United States," said the former secretary.

Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães also recalled a phrase the president made during the trip and classified it as extremely serious. "There are so many interesting aspects to the trip that must have shocked many people from different angles, regarding the visa issue... these are minor things, but there's a phrase from President Messias Bolsonaro that goes like this: 'I'm going to deconstruct Brazil,' that's very serious. When a president takes an oath to uphold the laws, he cannot say that he's going to deconstruct the country; that's extraordinary. What does he mean by that? He means everything that Mr. Paulo Guedes is doing, everything that Mr. Paulo Guedes has announced."

The former ambassador also commented on another statement by Bolsonaro, who claimed to be the first non-anti-American president to visit the country. "There are other minor episodes, such as the visit to the CIA and the assertion that it was the first time a president who wasn't anti-American had visited the United States, which reveals a profound ignorance of recent history, and an injustice to President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who was received with full honors by the President of the United States."

He also recalled former President Lula's relationship with Americans and their leaders. "President Lula himself was received numerous times by President Obama and President Bush, who was from the Republican Party and had excellent relations with President Lula."

Regarding the Alcântara base, located in Maranhão and ceded by President Bolsonaro to the Americans, the former Secretary-General explained the United States' interest in the territory. "Are they going to arrive and build a sophisticated launch base in Brazil to compete with one of their own? They're going to set up a military base there; the United States has a thousand military bases outside its territory, but not here, off the coast of Africa and within Brazil."
