247 - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that the peace plan presented by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's (PT) government is not necessary to end the war in Ukraine. Following Brazil's support for a United Nations (UN) resolution condemning Russia's recent annexation of Ukrainian regions, Ryabkov said he "regrets" the position of Brazilian diplomacy. Lula's proposal centers on mediation to end the war by a group of countries not involved in the conflict.

"There is no need for mediation, as such," Ryabkov stated, according to the journalist. Jamil Chad"We fully respect the political will of the Brazilian leadership, which wants to find a way to end the war," the diplomat added, according to UOL. "But when I say there is no need for mediation, the only thing that is needed from others is to recognize Russia's legitimate interest," he emphasized.

Regarding Brazil's vote at the United Nations General Assembly, Ryabkov said he "regretted" the position adopted by the Brazilian government. "We regret that Brazil voted the way it did," Ryabkov said. The diplomat did not directly mention pressure from foreign governments, but stressed that "Brazil's vote shows that considerations other than those about what actually happened were taken into account."

"If Brazil were able to fully appreciate the intricate logic of this tragic case, then I think Brazil would vote in a way that would at least involve abstention," he concluded.

Despite rejecting the Brazilian proposal, he stated that the positive relationship with the Lula government continues and highlighted that Foreign Ministers Mauro Vieira and Sergei Lavrov met in India this week and established a dialogue to expand bilateral cooperation.
