Russia and the US resume strategic dialogue today at a meeting in Saudi Arabia.
Meeting brings together high-ranking officials to discuss security and geopolitical issues.
247 - Delegations from Russia and the United States are meeting this Monday (24) in Saudi Arabia for a round of strategic negotiations, amid a complex global scenario. The information was released by the TASS news agency and confirmed by diplomatic sources from both countries. The meeting keeps the channels of dialogue open between Moscow and Washington.
The Russian delegation will be led by Grigory Karasin, head of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, and Sergey Beseda, advisor to the director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). On the American side, participants include Michael Anton, Director of Policy Planning at the State Department, as well as advisors sent specifically by US President Donald Trump to Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
The meeting takes place in a context of increasing geopolitical instability, marked by the war in Ukraine, the militarization of Europe, and the sanctions imposed on Moscow. Diplomatic sources stated that the meeting's main focus is regional security and the search for mechanisms to prevent military incidents and unintentional escalations. Saudi Arabia was chosen as the host country due to its position of relative neutrality and its ability to maintain communication channels with both powers.
Although expectations for concrete progress are moderate, the holding of the meeting is already considered a sign that Washington and Moscow recognize the need for dialogue amid difficult circumstances.
Saudi Arabia's role as mediator reflects the kingdom's growing prominence in global diplomacy, especially after its rapprochement with Russia within OPEC+ and its historical relationship with the United States. The choice of location suggests that Riyadh seeks to position itself as an actor capable of facilitating strategic dialogues between powers.
The meeting is part of a broader effort to re-establish some form of understanding between the world's two largest nuclear powers. Even if the practical results of the meeting are limited, the resumption of dialogue at a strategic level is already seen as a positive sign.
