Russia calls for an immediate end to all sanctions against Syria.
Moscow sees the recent decisions by several countries to ease sanctions as "a step in the right direction."
247 - Russia calls for an end to all unilateral sanctions against Syria, which have become useless after the change of power in the country, declared Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov on Tuesday (11).
"Under the current circumstances, it is necessary to abandon politicized and confrontational approaches to the Syrian crisis and consolidate international efforts to provide effective assistance to the Syrian people and promote the post-crisis reconstruction of the country. We support the swift lifting of all unilateral sanctions in place against the SRA [Syrian Arab Republic], which obviously hinder the accomplishment of this priority task," Bogdanov said in a statement released by the ministry.
Russia views the recent decisions by several countries to ease sanctions as "a step in the right direction," Bogdanov said, adding that, following the change of power in the country, "continuing sanctions pressure against Damascus has lost all meaning."
Economic restrictions against Syria have no international legal basis and were not approved by the UN Security Council in accordance with the UN Charter, Bogdanov said, noting that Russia has opposed such measures against Syria for years.
"Unfortunately, driven by their geopolitical ambitions, the governments of the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and several of their allies have imposed numerous 'suffocating' sanctions against Syria, which have largely provoked a devastating social and economic crisis in this country and now seriously impede its full recovery," Bogdanov added.
Terrorist groups in Syria captured Damascus on December 8, 2024. Bashar al-Assad resigned from the Syrian presidency and left the country for Russia, where he received asylum. Mohammed al-Bashir, who headed the Idlib-based administration formed by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group and other armed opposition groups, was appointed interim prime minister. He later announced that an interim government had been formed and would remain in power until March 2025.
In January, Ahmed Sharaa, leader of the new Syrian administration, was declared transitional president. (With information from...) Sputnik).
