247 – In the final stretch of the American presidential race, President Barack Obama still leads in the polls against rival Mitt Romney, but the Republican is beginning to gain a significant advantage in an area that could make all the difference: campaign fundraising.

In June, Romney managed to raise $106 million, compared to Obama's $71 million. In total, the Republican hopes to raise $800 million.

In the United States, where fundraising is not taboo and citizens can donate up to $2,5, Obama sent an email asking his voters for money. "We're behind. Romney and the Republican National Committee raised $106 million."

Four years ago, when he defeated John McCain, Obama raised twice as much money as his Republican rival. In an email to voters, Ann Marie Habershaw, who heads the Obama campaign, warned: "If we lose this election, it will be because we failed to match our opponents when we had the chance."
