Sputnik Members of the Republican Party in the United States risk disagreeing over the country's military aid to Ukraine if the party gains a majority in Congress after the midterm elections in November, CNN reports, citing congressmen.

As the US TV channel points out, several high-ranking members of the party have already announced their intention to "carefully study" US spending in Ukraine in the event of a Republican victory in the elections. Furthermore, the Republican minority leader in the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, has already stated that, in this scenario, Washington will continue to provide military assistance to Kiev, but there will no longer be a "blank check".

McCarthy also said that cutting spending in general will be the priority if Republicans gain control of the House. Media reports indicate he has a chance of becoming Speaker of the House in January, depending on the election results. At the same time, CNN notes that, on the other hand, the Republican minority leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, has publicly supported maintaining the levels of military aid granted to Kiev so far. The publication assesses that the division within the party could become "a point of contention" and "be part of a larger shift" in the Ukrainian conflict.

The Russian Foreign Ministry claims that NATO countries are "playing with fire" by supplying weapons to Ukraine. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, any shipment containing weapons destined for Ukraine will become a legitimate target for Moscow.

On another occasion, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that the policy of sending weapons to Ukraine does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.
