Xinhua - Syria joined China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on Wednesday (13), which will help the country open up broad horizons of cooperation with China and other countries.

The ceremony for Syria's admission to the initiative took place at the Planning and International Cooperation Commission in the capital, Damascus, and was attended by Fadi Khalil, head of the commission, and Feng Biao, China's ambassador to Syria, during which both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on joining the BRI.

Khalil said that Syria's admission to the initiative revives the country's former role on the ancient Silk Road and will help boost bilateral cooperation with China, as well as multilateral cooperation with other countries.

He noted that Syria was one of the main countries on the ancient Silk Road, particularly the cities of Aleppo and Palmyra.

He highlighted that Syria's signing of the admission to the initiative reflects a long and long history of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, Feng said that cooperation between the two countries provides the greatest contribution to economic reconstruction and social development in Syria, and also increases harmonization between the BRI and the strategy for the east proposed by Syria.

The ambassador highlighted that the initiative aligns with the strong desire of countries worldwide for broad economic participation, noting that the initiative has become the largest platform for international cooperation in the world.

The BRI, proposed by China in 2013, comprises the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, aiming to build a network of trade, investment, and infrastructure connecting Asia with other parts of the world along the ancient Silk Road trade routes and beyond.
