Agency Brazil – The families in Afghanistan who lost relatives and had people injured in the Kandahar massacre have been compensated by the United States Armed Forces. According to Afghan authorities, the families received US$46 (approximately R$83) for each of the deceased victims. The families of those injured in the attack received US$10 (approximately R$18).

Initially, US authorities reported 16 deaths, but now they mention 17. The crime occurred on the 11th of this month. Sergeant Robert Bales is accused of killing nine children and eight adults overnight while they were at home.

The killings took place in two villages in southern Afghanistan. The deaths sparked a series of protests against the American occupation. Local leaders even announced their intention to take revenge on those responsible for the killings.

On Friday (23), the sergeant was indicted for premeditated murder and attempted murder, among other crimes. He awaits trial in custody at a prison in Kansas, in the United States.

Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne, said the soldier is traumatized by the death of a colleague and had been deployed to the front lines very frequently.
