Sputnik Brazil - Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his deepest condolences for the death of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Sputnik.

The former leader and last president of the defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) died this Tuesday (30). Gorbachev was hospitalized at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow, where he was admitted on Monday (29), to undergo a hemodialysis session.

"President Putin expresses his deepest condolences on the death of Mikhail Gorbachev. He will send a telegram of condolences to the family and friends [of the former Soviet leader] this morning," Peskov said.

Although there is still no clear information about what led to Gorbachev's death, rumors recently circulated about a supposed deterioration in his health. At the time, this information was refuted by the Gorbachev Foundation.

Born in 1931 in the Russian city of Privolnoe, Gorbachev came from a peasant background and graduated in Law from Moscow University in 1955. The former Soviet leader joined the Communist Party of the USSR in 1962 and assumed the position of General Secretary in 1985.

Gorbachev, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, remained at the head of the USSR until its turbulent dissolution in 1991, having led the famous "Glasnost" (transparency and freedom of expression) and "Perestroika" (reconstruction, reform) reforms in the country's final years.
