Putin says Nobel Prize lost credibility after awarding prize to Maria Corina.
Russia has denounced the United States' intention to promote war in South America.
247 - Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out on Friday (10) about the alleged efforts of US President Donald Trump in resolving international conflicts. During an interview in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where he was participating in a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Putin commented on whether Trump deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. According to Putin, the American president's efforts in resolving international crises cannot be ignored, reports the RT.
Trump, who had repeatedly stated that he deserved to be awarded the Nobel Prize, was once again left out of this year's awards. Instead of Trump, the Norwegian committee awarded the Venezuelan opposition leader, María Corina Machado. Putin, in turn, highlighted that the committee has a history of choosing people who, in his view, "have done nothing for peace." The Russian leader, without naming names, recalled that the selection of laureates does not always reflect concrete actions for conflict resolution. "President Trump has really done a lot to resolve difficult crises that have lasted for years or even decades," Putin stated.
"In my opinion, by making such decisions, they significantly undermined the credibility of the award."
Recently, Trump has been involved in negotiations in the Middle East, hoping to reach a lasting solution. Putin acknowledged the importance of these attempts, considering that if Trump manages to achieve his goals, it will represent a historic milestone. "If he achieves everything he said he wants to do, it will be a historic event," Putin added. Furthermore, the Russian president stated that, despite the challenges, the talks held between Trump and Russian officials in Anchorage, Alaska, in August, still have great potential to yield significant results.
Regarding the crisis in Ukraine, Putin reiterated that Trump's attempts to mediate an end to the conflict are genuine. "We managed to achieve some things, others not, but the discussions we had in Anchorage still have the potential to achieve a lot. What is certain is that Trump is really making an effort," the Russian president stated.
Despite his defense of Trump's diplomatic efforts, Putin stated that it is not up to him to decide who deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. However, he made a point of emphasizing that, in his opinion, some past choices by the committee have discredited the prize.
