Palestinian president proposes Gaza deal with UN and Trump.
In a virtual address, Mahmoud Abbas said that the Palestinian Authority is willing to assume "full responsibility for governance and security" in the enclave.
247 - Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared on Thursday (25) that he is ready to work with the United States, Saudi Arabia, France and the United Nations to implement a peace plan overwhelmingly approved by the UN General Assembly. The information is from Reuters.
In a speech broadcast via video – after the US denied his visa to attend the meeting in New York – Abbas said that the Palestinian Authority is willing to assume “full responsibility for governance and security” in the Gaza Strip, provided that a real ceasefire is guaranteed and progress is made towards a two-state solution.
“Despite all that our people have suffered, we reject what Hamas carried out on October 7th, because such actions do not represent the Palestinian people nor their just struggle for freedom and independence,” Abbas stated. He reiterated that Hamas will have no role in the future government of the territory and that all factions must surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority.
The General Assembly, composed of 193 countries, approved this month a seven-page declaration advocating the creation of a Palestinian state and an immediate end to the Israeli offensive, which has already killed more than 65 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to local health authorities. The document was the result of an international conference organized in July by France and Saudi Arabia. The United States and Israel boycotted the meeting and continue to reject multilateral peace efforts.
Abbas also confirmed that he received the 21-point peace plan presented by Donald Trump during meetings with leaders of Muslim-majority countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. "We declare our readiness to work with President Donald Trump, Saudi Arabia, France, the United Nations and all partners to implement the peace plan," he said.
Meanwhile, the genocide in Gaza marks almost two years of bombings and blockades, leaving the region in a state of humanitarian collapse and reinforcing international calls for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations that guarantee the creation of a viable Palestinian state.
