Peru's president is considering suing Odebrecht for damages.

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said on Saturday that he is considering filing a lawsuit against Odebrecht for damages, after the Brazilian construction company admitted to paying bribes to officials in several countries, including Peru, to win bids. "We are analyzing several alternatives, undoubtedly one of them is this (lawsuit), but we must look at each case individually because otherwise we will get into terrible complications of endless trials," Kuczynski said.

247 - Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said on Saturday that he is considering suing Odebrecht for damages, after the Brazilian construction company admitted to paying bribes to officials in several countries, including Peru, to win bids for public works projects.

"We are analyzing several alternatives, undoubtedly one of them is this (complaint), but we must look at each case individually because otherwise we will get into terrible complications of endless trials," Kuczynski told RPP when asked if Peru would file a lawsuit against the Brazilian construction company.

According to information provided by the United States Department of Justice, Odebrecht admitted to paying $29 million to Peruvian state officials in exchange for contracts for construction projects between 2005 and 2014.

Kuczynski explained that to make any accusation, one must be well prepared so as not to embark on something that could later be counterproductive for the country.

"The Peruvian justice system must become fully informed of the matter and examine the details in order to make a decision based on that," the president stated. Kuczynski spoke with the Attorney General's office to obtain the names of the officials and executives involved in the bribery case. "If there are defendants, which there undoubtedly are, they must go through the judicial system and have their names made public."
