EFE - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani argued on Tuesday (9) that the Revolutionary Guards have always had a "leading role" in the fight against terrorism and assured that their popularity in the country will increase after the designation of this elite military body as a terrorist group by the United States.

"The Guardians of the Revolution have always fought against terrorism, while these terrorists were created and financed by the hegemonic powers (USA)," the leader emphasized in a speech broadcast live on state television.

Rohani denounced that the US "over the past 40 years has planned countless acts against the Iranian nation, all of which have failed," and that, to compensate for these setbacks, they have classified the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group.

In his opinion, Washington's decision is "a mistake," since it will not be able to break Iran's unity and "from now on the popularity of the Guardians will grow among the Iranian people."

The Iranian president also denounced the US for playing a "leading role in the spread of terrorism in the world" and stated that American troops "have always been an intervention force in the region."

"Their plots will not affect the region," Rohani said, citing sanctions imposed by Washington against Iran and its decisions in favor of Israel regarding Jerusalem and the occupied Golan Heights in Syria.

US President Donald Trump decided on Monday (8) to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group, to which Iran's Supreme National Security Council responded by also labeling US troops in the Middle East as terrorists.
