Romanian President resigns amid post-election political crisis.
The Eastern European country has plunged into a political crisis after December election results were invalidated.
247 - Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation on Monday (10), stating that he will leave office on Wednesday (12), while the country goes through a post-election political crisis.
"To spare Romania and Romanian citizens from this crisis... I am resigning from the post of President of Romania," Iohannis stated at a press conference in the Cotroceni Palace. "I will leave office the day after tomorrow, on February 12th," he added.
The decision came as the country's parliament prepared to meet on Tuesday (11) to discuss a motion to suspend the president. Opponents have been pushing to suspend him because of his decision to remain in office until a new presidential election, scheduled for May.
The political crisis in the Eastern European country was triggered after the November 2024 presidential elections, in which independent candidate Calin Georgescu, considered pro-Russian, led the first round with 22,94% of the vote, boosted by an active campaign on TikTok. Elena Lasconi, who advocates strengthening the partnership with NATO and the United States, came in second with 19,18%.
However, on December 6, the Constitutional Court annulled the election results, citing serious violations confirmed by declassified documents from the Supreme Security Council. In response, the government decided to hold new elections, with the first round scheduled for May 4, and the country was engulfed in demonstrations by supporters of both candidates.
The protests also began to target Iohannis, due to his role in the annulment of the election and his reluctance to lead the country decisively. (With information from...) Sputnik).
