Xi urged both sides to implement the agreements reached by him and US President Donald Trump during their meeting in Beijing, strengthen communication, increase mutual trust, properly address differences, and expand cooperation, in order to ensure that bilateral ties continue forward on the right path to benefit the people and the world.
The two countries should always correctly understand each other's strategic intentions and should respect and take into account each other's fundamental interests and major concerns, Xi said, adding that this is the important lesson learned from the nearly 40 years of developing bilateral ties since establishing diplomatic relations.
China is committed to developing cooperative relations with the United States characterized by mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, and win-win results, Xi noted.
The president called for more high-level exchanges and institutional dialogue, expanded cooperation in various areas, and increased local and people-to-people exchanges to strengthen the foundation of bilateral ties.
Xi expressed his hope that the American side would prudently handle sensitive issues, including the Taiwan issue and economic and trade frictions, to avoid a serious obstruction of bilateral ties.
China and the United States should strengthen communication and coordination on major regional and international issues and those of global importance, Xi said, calling for the two countries to work together in building world peace and maintaining international order.
Pompeo conveyed President Trump's greetings to President Xi, especially Trump's gratitude for Xi's important advice and assistance on the Korean Peninsula issue.
In addition to praising the steady development of U.S.-China relations under the joint leadership of the two leaders, Pompeo said the United States attaches importance to bilateral ties and is prepared to strengthen communication with China, properly address prominent issues, deepen cooperation in various fields, and address regional and global challenges.
The United States appreciates China's important role in the political resolution of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, Pompeo said, adding that the United States is willing to work with China to advance denuclearization and lasting peace on the peninsula.
Xi asked Pompeo to convey his greetings to President Trump and emphasized that the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), was historic, fruitful, and an important step in the process of a political solution to the peninsula's nuclear issue, saying that China extends its sincere congratulations to both sides.
Issues related to the Korean Peninsula are complex and should be resolved gradually, Xi indicated, saying that China hopes the two sides will respect each other, work towards a shared goal, and make constant efforts to resolve problems politically.
China firmly adheres to the denuclearization of the peninsula and to its peace and stability, and insists on resolving problems through dialogue, Xi said, adding that China will continue to play an active and constructive role, and will work with the relevant parties, including the United States, to promote a political solution to the issue.
