Ricardo Guzmán Romero was shot by passengers in a van that stormed the political event, firing shots. One of the bullets pierced his right lung.
Guzmán was campaigning for Hugo Anaya, the National Action Party candidate for his successor. According to AFP, the state of Michoacan has a population of 4,3 million and is one of the most affected by drug trafficking violence in Mexico. It is there that the "La Familia" drug cartel operates, one of the most bloodthirsty in the country, competing with the "Los Zetas" cartel and others.
On November 13th, the state governor and 113 mayors will be elected.
