Brasilia – Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota will be in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, on the 9th. This is Patriota's first visit to the country since Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez began cancer treatment in Cuba. From Venezuela, the Foreign Minister is expected to travel to the United States where he will participate in meetings with authorities and give lectures at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
In Venezuela, the Brazilian Foreign Minister is meeting with the country's acting president, Nicolás Maduro, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elias Jaua. The new Venezuelan minister was appointed shortly after Maduro's designation as Vice President of the Republic. Until then, Maduro was the country's Foreign Minister, a position he held for six years.
The details of Patriota's agenda in Venezuela are still being finalized. Since Chávez's hospitalization in December, the Brazilian government has been monitoring the political situation in Venezuela. According to Brazilian authorities, there is confidence in the respect for institutions and democracy in the country.
After his trip to Venezuela, Patriota will remain in the United States until the 12th. However, his activities in the country are still being defined. In addition to meetings with US authorities, the Foreign Minister is expected to give lectures at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
