Pope Francis remains in critical condition with kidney failure.
The 88-year-old Pope is facing respiratory and kidney complications; the Vatican is keeping its prognosis guarded.
247 - Pope Francis, 88, remains hospitalized in critical condition at Gemelli Hospital in Rome after suffering a prolonged asthma attack and being diagnosed with mild kidney failure. The information was released by the Vatican on Sunday (23).
According to the Holy See, the pontiff was hospitalized on February 14 due to persistent bronchitis that progressed to bilateral pneumonia. During his hospitalization, Francis presented with thrombocytopenia (a decrease in platelets) and anemia, requiring blood transfusions and high-flow oxygen therapy. Although no new respiratory crises have occurred, recent tests have indicated the presence of mild renal insufficiency, which is being monitored and controlled by doctors.
Despite the seriousness of his condition, the Pope has shown moments of lucidity and has participated in masses from his hospital suite. In a message released by the Vatican, Francis expressed confidence in his recovery and thanked the medical staff for their dedicated care: "I continue with confidence in the treatment and I am deeply grateful to the medical staff and for the countless expressions of affection, especially from the children."
The Vatican reported that although the Pope had a quiet night after his asthma attack, his health remains critical due to the complexity of his clinical condition. The prognosis is guarded, and there is no discharge date set at this time.
This is the second consecutive week that Francis will not lead the public Sunday prayer, reflecting the seriousness of his condition. The worldwide Catholic community remains in vigil, offering prayers for the pontiff's recovery.
Pope Francis' health has been a cause for concern in recent years. In 2021, he underwent colon surgery, and in 2023, he faced a respiratory infection that required hospitalization. At 88 years old, the pontiff continues to grapple with health challenges, while maintaining his commitment to leading the Catholic Church.
The Holy See will continue to provide updates on Pope Francis's health as new information becomes available.
