Pope Francis expresses solidarity with Muslims after mosque attacks.

Pope Francis declared this Friday (15) that he was very saddened by the acts of violence committed against two mosques in New Zealand, expressing his solidarity with the country's Muslim community.

247, with AFP - Pope Francis declared this Friday (15) that he was very sad about the acts of violence committed against two mosques in New Zealand, expressing his solidarity with the country's Muslim community.

"Pope Francis was deeply saddened to learn of the injuries and deaths caused by senseless acts of violence against two mosques in Christchurch, and assures all New Zealanders, and in particular the Muslim community, of his sincere solidarity at this time," states a communiqué signed by the Vatican's number two, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

"His Holiness prays for the recovery of the injured, the consolation of those who mourn the loss of their loved ones, and for all those affected by this tragedy," the text adds.

At least 49 people died in attacks on Friday against two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, and according to local authorities, one of the perpetrators has been identified as an Australian extremist.

The attacks in this South Island city also left 20 people seriously injured.
