247 - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson failed to provide objective answers to specific questions raised by the opposition in the House of Commons regarding the government's roadmap for ending the lockdown.

The leader of the opposition Labour Party, Keir Starmer, challenged each of the measures announced by the Prime Minister in a 50-page document, concluding that there were very few answers to the concerns of the population.

What the country needs now is clarity and assurances, and right now we are lacking both, Starmer said.

The Labour politician asked Johnson, for example, if there were safety measures in place for returning to work from Wednesday for those who cannot work from home, and if there had been discussions with unions and employers.

He also called on him to explain what scientific criteria support the roadmap and the decision to change the strategy against Covid-19. Until then, the government had asked the population to “stay home, protect the NHS (National Health Service), and save lives.” Now, the watchword is to be “alert, control the virus, and protect lives.”

The Scottish National Party's spokesperson in Parliament, Ian Blackford, commented that the last 24 hours have been filled with confusion, warning that the issuing of different messages puts lives at risk.

The Scottish MP specifically mentioned the decision that the devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland took to distance themselves from Johnson's plan and adopted their own regulations.

In turn, Johnson admitted that the change in strategy would bring "inevitable complexities" and appealed to people's common sense to avoid a second peak of the epidemic. This is the time for the whole country to unite, obey the rules and use common sense, noted the president, who did not rule out a return to strict lockdown if the measures do not work.
