Brazil Agency - The United Nations (UN) will provide food assistance to people affected by the earthquake in Nepal, the institution's main agencies announced today (28) at a press conference.

"The World Food Programme plans to provide humanitarian assistance over the next three months to 1,4 million people who are in dire need of food. It will be a massive operation," said the organization's spokesperson, Elizabeth Byrs, adding that it would be a very difficult operation due to the country's mountainous terrain.

According to the spokesperson for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Christophe Boulierac, initial assessments indicate that "1,3 million children need urgent humanitarian assistance." Many of them are in rural villages, where "an exact assessment of the damage has not yet been made."

Of Nepal's approximately 30 million inhabitants, 40% are children. UNICEF's immediate concern is the risk of the spread of diseases related to the lack of clean drinking water.

There is also concern that the storm season is approaching in May, which will increase the difficulty of rescue operations.

The earthquake recorded on Saturday (25) in Nepal devastated the country, caused more than 4,3 deaths and affected 8 million people.
