247, with Prensa Latina - Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed this Saturday (5) that his country bases its foreign policy on the principle of non-intervention and therefore refused to sign the Lima Group declaration against Venezuela.

The Mexican president made these statements in Ciudad Juárez shortly before boarding a plane back to the Federal Capital after presenting the plan to create a border-free zone on the northern border with the United States.

López Obrador thus reaffirmed his government's position within the Lima Group, which decided not to recognize Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, elected in the last general elections and who will be sworn in for a new presidential term on January 10.

He insisted on respecting the "constitutional principles of non-intervention and self-determination of peoples in matters of foreign policy" and emphasized: "We do not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries because we do not want other governments, other countries, to meddle in matters that only concern Mexicans."

Mexico is convinced that interference in Venezuela, far from resolving the country's situation, would lead to a further deterioration of the living conditions of Venezuelans; therefore, Mexico does not support any path that does not prioritize the promotion of peace and dialogue.
