247 - US President Barack Obama said on Friday night (15) that the Turkish people should stand with the democratically elected government. He thus condemned the ongoing military coup attempt in the country.

Obama spoke with Secretary of State John Kerry by phone. According to a statement released by the White House, they agreed that all parties should support the democratically elected Turkish government.

Turkish Armed Forces have assumed "full control" of the country, according to an army statement. The US embassy in Ankara reported that gunfire was heard in the city, bridges and buildings were blocked, and urged American citizens in the country to contact their families to reassure them.

"The Turkish government states that members of the army are attempting a revolt, security forces are taking measures to contain them, and some buildings are under lockdown," says the statement from the US embassy.
