Obama blames lobby for weak gun laws.

US President Barack Obama blamed public apathy, combined with the strong power in Congress of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the powerful gun lobby in the US, for blocking stricter gun control laws; "Unfortunately, the NRA's power in Congress is extremely strong," he said.

Reuters President Barack Obama blamed public apathy, combined with the strong power in Congress of the National Rifle Association, the powerful gun lobby in the US, for blocking stricter gun control laws.

Speaking during a recorded interview on Friday, just two days after the mass murder at an African-American church in South Carolina, Obama said he does not foresee any rapid changes to gun laws.

"Unfortunately, the NRA's power in Congress is extremely strong," Obama said in an excerpt from the "WTF with Marc Maron" interview published by the New York Times.

This was not the first time Obama had campaigned against the NRA.

After the school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, a tragedy that Obama called his most difficult moment in office, he pressed for changes to gun laws.
