The number of deaths from coronavirus in Italy has risen by 525. The number of new cases is also increasing.

The number of new cases accelerated sharply on Thursday (16) to 3.786, compared to the previous 2.667. The number of new infections was also the highest since Sunday.

ROME (Reuters) Italy recorded 525 new Covid-19 deaths on Thursday, compared to 578 the previous day, but the number of new cases accelerated sharply to 3.786, compared to 2.667 previously.

The daily death toll was the lowest since Sunday, while the number of new infections was also the highest since Sunday.

The total number of deaths since the outbreak began on February 21 has reached 22.170, according to the Civil Protection Agency, the second largest in the world after the United States.

The number of officially confirmed cases has risen to 168.941, the third highest global count, behind the United States and Spain.

There were 2.936 people in intensive care on Thursday compared to 3.079 on Wednesday - the 13th consecutive daily decline.

Of those originally infected, 40.164 have been declared recovered, compared to 38.092 the previous day.
