New European security architecture must provide guarantees to Russia, says Macron.
The United States rejected Russia's demands before the conflict in Ukraine.
247 - French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the West must begin to consider how to meet the security guarantees demanded by Russia if President Vladimir Putin agrees to negotiate a solution to the conflict in Ukraine, according to Reuters.
In an interview with French TV station TF1, Macron said that Europe needs to build a new security architecture.
"This means that one of the essential points we must address—as President Putin has always said—is the fear that NATO will knock on our doors and deploy weapons that could threaten Russia," Macron said. The interview was recorded during the French president's visit to the United States last week.
"This issue will be part of the peace agenda, so we need to prepare what we are ready to do, such as protecting our allies and member states and how to give guarantees to Russia on the day it returns to the negotiating table," Macron said.
On February 8, just weeks before Moscow launched what it calls a special military operation in Ukraine, Putin said at a joint press conference with Macron in the Russian capital that Russia would continue trying to get answers from the West on its three main security demands: an end to NATO expansion; no missile deployments near Russian borders; and a reduction of NATO's military infrastructure in Europe to 1997 levels.
The United States rejected Russia's demands. Two weeks later, the special military operation began. Now, US President Joe Biden says he is open to negotiations to end the conflict, provided Russian troops 'leave Ukraine'. Kremlin He stated that he will not grant Washington any preconditions.
