247 - During an event organized by the FAO - the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization - on combating world hunger, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel defended former President Lula's legacy in the fight against poverty and hunger.
"He did an extraordinary job lifting more than 36 million Brazilians out of extreme poverty," the Argentinian said. "Today he is a political prisoner. But he is a name that has worked and fought against hunger, against extreme poverty. And I believe that this is an example we must keep in mind," he concluded.
Recently, Pérez Esquivel attempted to visit Lula at the Federal Police headquarters in Curitiba, where the former president is imprisoned, but was prevented by the courts. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate denounced the state of exception in the country. He also initiated a... internet campaign to defend Lula's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, which has already gathered more than 260 signatures.
