NEW YORK, TASS – The Starlink satellite communication network is necessary to guarantee communication in Ukraine, but it should not be used for an escalation that could lead to a Third World War, said US entrepreneur Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, which owns satellite communication facilities, on Monday.

"Starlink is the backbone of Ukraine's communications, especially on the front lines where almost all other internet connections have been destroyed. But we will not allow the conflict to escalate into a situation that could lead to World War III," Musk wrote on Twitter.

Last week, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said the company restricted access to the Starlink network for military drones in Ukraine because, according to her, the network "was not designed for use in offensive or military operations."

The Starlink network was designed to provide internet access by deploying a large number of vehicles weighing 260 kilograms. According to SpaceX, it will be able to provide broadband internet access at 1 gigabit per second, meeting the 5G standard. Since May 2019, SpaceX has placed more than 3.200 Starlink satellites into orbit.
