Coronavirus deaths in Africa increased by 60% in one week.

According to the WHO, the death toll has reached 879 and the number of registered cases of the disease totals 16.879. The majority of cases are located in South Africa, Algeria, and Egypt. The highest number of deaths was recorded in Algeria (336), followed by Egypt (127) and Morocco (127).

247 - Deaths related to the new coronavirus increased by 60% in the last week, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the organization, the number of deaths has reached 879 and the number of registered cases of the disease totals 16.879. Most cases are located in South Africa, Algeria, and Egypt. The highest number of deaths was recorded in Algeria (336), followed by Egypt (127) and Morocco (127). 

The WHO's regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, warns that "the humanitarian and economic consequences of this pandemic will be very severe in Africa, and we need global solidarity and collective action to mitigate its impacts." She also criticized the decision by US President Donald Trump to suspend US funding to the WHO. 

"The potential impact of this decision will be quite significant in areas such as polio eradication, as well as in priority programs addressing communicable diseases like HIV and malaria. I hope this decision will be reviewed. The United States is a strategic partner, and we greatly value this relationship," said Moeti.
