Cuban minister calls for Lula's release: the fight will continue until justice is served.
"One year after his unjust imprisonment, let us all call upon and redouble our efforts for his release, to prevent Lula's political imprisonment; the struggle will continue until the day justice is served," wrote Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla on Twitter.
Sputnik Brazil - Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla called for international solidarity in support of the release of former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for alleged corruption offenses.
"One year after his unjust imprisonment, let us all call upon and redouble our efforts for his release, to prevent Lula's political imprisonment; the struggle will continue until the day justice is served," wrote the Cuban Foreign Minister on his Twitter account.
Lula is imprisoned at the Federal Police headquarters in Curitiba, where he is serving a 12-year and one-month prison sentence after being convicted in the second instance for passive corruption and money laundering, in connection with the Guarujá (SP) triplex case.
Lula was accused by the Public Prosecutor's Office of receiving an apartment that was allegedly paid for and renovated with securities from three specific contracts signed between Petrobras and the construction company OAS.
However, the judge who convicted him, Sérgio Moro, the current Minister of Justice, acknowledged in the proceedings that he found no evidence to support any claims made about Lula's Petrobras contracts.
The 73-year-old politician left office with an 80% approval rating, according to polls at the time.
