From the Sputnik Agency –  The coup in Türkiye was organized by former air force commander Akin Ozturk, local media reported on Saturday.

Ozturk, born in 1952, is a former four-star general in the Turkish Air Force. He retired from service in 2015 but remained a member of the country's Supreme Military Council.

During the night, those involved in the coup attacked a series of facilities in Ankara, including the General Staff building, the police headquarters, the Ministry of the Interior, and Parliament. Parliament suffered airstrikes, leaving an unknown number of injured.

Following an appeal by the country's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the streets of Turkey's main cities were filled with thousands of people opposed to the military coup. In Taksim Square, Istanbul, the military fired on demonstrators protesting against the army's intervention. Data on the dead and wounded has not yet been compiled, according to the NTV broadcaster, but at least 6 people died during the unrest in Istanbul. According to the Anadolu Agency, 17 police officers died in Ankara.

A few hours after the start of the attempted coup, Turkey's National Intelligence Organization reported that the situation in the country had "returned to normal."
