Media: US and Europe fear 'Russian invasion' of Ukraine could lead to refugee crisis.
Fox News cited anonymous sources saying that the US and European states are preparing for an exodus of people from Ukraine in the event of war.
Sputnik - The US is making preparations for a major refugee and migrant crisis due to the situation surrounding Ukraine, Fox News wrote on Sunday (6), citing a source familiar with the matter.
European countries are also discussing possible accommodation and migration flows for displaced Ukrainians, who would allegedly flee to other European regions, according to the source.
Furthermore, Fox News indicated, citing sources in the US Congress, that Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, held closed-door briefings with anonymous lawmakers on Wednesday (2) and Thursday (3) and informed them that Kiev would fall within 72 hours if Russia launched a military operation against Ukraine. He added that the invasion could result in 15.000 Ukrainian soldiers killed and 4.000 among Russian troops.
Some US lawmakers expressed concern that Washington had not provided significant and timely military support, such as anti-aircraft systems and rocket launchers. However, members of Joe Biden's administration present at the briefings responded that military aid of that caliber could be used as a reason to attack Ukraine, according to Fox News.
Russia has repeatedly denied all accusations from Western countries that it wants to invade Ukraine and is concerned about increasing NATO military activity near Russian borders. Moscow does not deny the possibility that the "hysteria" surrounding Ukraine could be used by the West to provoke Russia. Despite Russian attempts to reshape European security in talks with NATO, these have been unsuccessful.
