In addition to the French patrol vessel, Saturday's operations mobilized several Italian ships, including four coast guard vessels, two navy vessels, two cargo ships, two customs police vessels, and two tugboats.
The Italian Navy announced that its frigate 'Bersagliere' rescued 778 migrants and its patrol boat, another 675. Some of those rescued on Saturday arrived overnight on the Italian island of Lampedusa, the closest to the African coast, while most were expected today, after noon or at night, in Sicily or southern Italy.
Every day, hundreds of African and Syrian immigrants arrive on the Italian coast after being rescued by the Italian Navy and Coast Guard services.
