Maintaining a trade agreement with Brazil is tantamount to being 'complicit in a massacre,' says European MEP.

During a session of the European Parliament, Marisa Matias advocated for the termination of the treaty between the European Union and Mercosur due to the "crimes" committed by the Jair Bolsonaro government.

Forum Magazine - European MEP Marisa Matias advocated ending the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur because of the “crimes” committed by the Jair Bolsonaro government. In a session of the European Parliament that discussed environmental policies this Friday (19), the MEP elected by Portugal stated that remaining in the agreement is to be “complicit in a massacre”.

“Bolsonaro’s behavior is criminal and, for that very reason, we cannot entrust the trade agreement to someone who attacks the environment and indigenous communities. If we do not withdraw from the EU-Mercosur agreement, we will be complicit in this massacre,” argued Marisa, from the Left Bloc party, which in the European Parliament is part of the Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL).

“I want to appeal to the European Commission: listen to the voices of the Brazilian people, the voices of those who defend the heart of the Amazon, the indigenous peoples, listen to our voices, and end the agreement. We must stand with the people and not with the multinationals,” Marisa continued.
