TeleSur - The Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz) reported on Tuesday the assassination of José Euclides González Marín in Caloto, Cauca, bringing the total to 14 social leaders executed in Colombia in January of this year.

According to the organization, González was a recognized leader from Northern Cauca, and served as vice-president of the Association of Workers of the Peasant Reserve Zones of Caloto (Astazonacar).

Furthermore, he was an active member of the Popular Unity Process of Southwestern Colombia (Pupsoc), where he worked to guarantee labor and human rights in the area.

José Euclides was murdered around 16:00 PM local time this Monday in the village of El Pleasure in the municipality of Caloto, when, according to local press, he was approached by criminals who acted against him.

Despite the absence of official reports from local authorities, the Dagoberto Ramos Mobile Column of the Western Coordination Command operates in this region.

The Ombudsman issued Prior Notices: 007/21 of Imminence and 067/18 for the municipality of Caloto, where citizens are warned of the risks, both in rural and urban areas, of the presence of armed groups, allegedly responsible for threats and other serious violations of human rights.

With this new leader, the number of assassinations since the signing of the Peace Agreement in Colombia has reached 1.300. In January 2022 alone, there were 13 assassinations, 3 of which were signatories to the agreement.

Indepaz, together with the Observatory of Human Rights and Conflicts, the Investigation and Prosecution Unit of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), and the Ombudsman's Office, recorded that 13 massacres occurred in just one month of 2022.

Similarly, they recorded 214 selective homicides, 98 threats, 58 attempted homicides, 25 stalking incidents, 17 enforced disappearances, and 16 mass forced displacements.
