The World Food Forum, promoted by the FAO, opens on Monday. Following that, Lula will participate in a meeting of the Council of Champions of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, which is composed of ministers, government representatives, UN agencies, multilateral banks, and civil society organizations.
Co-chaired by Brazil and Spain, the meeting will take place in a hybrid format and will assess the progress of the initiative since its creation in 2024. The 2025 edition will be marked by a series of commemorative activities and recognition of good practices in food security and sustainable agriculture.
The Global Alliance Against Hunger was established as a proposal from the Brazilian presidency of the G20 to support and accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger, poverty, and reduce inequalities.
The invitation for Lula to participate in the Forum came from the FAO Director-General in July, when the Brazilian president was informed that Brazil had been removed from the Hunger Map.
Lula departed for Italy this Saturday and, after participating in a FAO meeting in Rome, will return to Brazil on Monday night. Upon arriving in Brasília, the president will have an agenda focused on domestic issues, including discussions with the economic team regarding the defeat of the provisional measure on IOF (Tax on Financial Operations), rejected by Congress, and on the next steps for choosing the new minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), following the announcement of Luís Roberto Barroso's retirement.
