Lula receives the head of diplomacy of the European Union in Brasilia.
Meeting at the Alvorada Palace seeks to intensify negotiations on the Mercosur trade agreement with the EU.
247 - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will receive the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, in Brasília this Friday (19). The meeting is scheduled for 11 am, at the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the Presidency of the Republic, and aims to broaden the dialogue between Brazil and the bloc.
The meeting will also be attended by the European Union Ambassador to Brazil, Marian Schuegraf. It is expected that Lula and Kallas will discuss strategic issues such as cooperation in defense, the energy transition, and addressing climate change, as well as other areas of common interest.
Mercosur-EU agreement on the agenda
The visit comes at a time when the Brazilian government is seeking to intensify negotiations for the conclusion of the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. Lula, who has advocated for strengthening multilateral partnerships, recently spoke by telephone with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. In the call, which took place on September 5th, the president reiterated Brazil's interest in signing the treaty by 2025.
Strategic cooperation
Beyond trade, discussions with Kaja Kallas are expected to include partnerships in innovation, sustainable investments, and international security. Analysts believe the meeting symbolizes Brazil's commitment to consolidating its position as a relevant interlocutor on the global stage, while simultaneously strengthening diplomatic ties with the European Union on sensitive issues on the international agenda.
