247 - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral institutions “have stopped functioning” and have failed to protect the victims of the war in the Gaza Strip.

The statement, according to the agency HANDLEThe statement was made after a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, prior to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. According to Lula, the world is currently experiencing a moment in which international organizations created to preserve peace have ceased to fulfill their historical role.

"The UN no longer works," says Lula.

“Who can accept the genocide that has been occurring in the Gaza Strip for so long? The multilateral institutions created to prevent these events from happening have ceased to function. Today, the UN Security Council and the United Nations itself are no longer functioning,” the president stated, according to the report.

Lula emphasized that the UN's paralysis in the face of human tragedies undermines the organization's credibility and reinforces the need for urgent reform of the multilateral system. The Brazilian leader is also scheduled to meet with the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, during the ASEAN summit to discuss issues related to bilateral trade, global governance, and international security.

The situation in Gaza remains critical.

While leaders discuss diplomatic solutions, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza persists. Father Gabriel Romanelli, parish priest of the Holy Family Church, described how, despite the announced ceasefire, the local reality remains bleak.

“There is a ceasefire, and we hope it lasts, but for now, the suffering continues intensely. There are still deaths, we cannot cross the border, and humanitarian aid is not arriving from Egypt. Some people have managed to reach Jordan, which is certainly a good sign, but the truce is very fragile,” the religious leader stated.

Romanelli, who is originally from Argentina, pointed out that the economic crisis is worsening the situation. "Many foods are returning to the market, and prices are falling a little, but people don't have the money to pay for them," he lamented.
