Matheus Lobo Pismel and Rodrigo Chagas, for 247 - Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared his support this Saturday for the March for Peace with Social Justice and Public Defense, which will take place in Bogotá next Tuesday, the 9th. The mobilization was launched by the social and political movement Marcha Patriótica, but includes the participation of several other left-wing sectors such as the Congreso de los Pueblos. The mayor of Bogotá, Gustavo Petro, is also calling for the march, including with messages at bus stops and on the city's bus signs.
Lula's statement is being released on the Bogotá city hall's YouTube channel. "Brazil and Latin America are enthusiastically following the peace-building process in Colombia. (...) Colombia's victory in the battle for peace will be not only yours, but of all of Latin America," believes the former president. The relationship between the two politicians is close. In January of this year, Petro was the only Colombian invited by Lula to a meeting of Latin American intellectuals in São Paulo, where they debated the regional integration of the continent.
The date of the March for Peace with Social Justice commemorates the death of the most prominent popular leader in recent Colombian history, Jorge Eliecer Gaitán, of the Liberal Party. He was assassinated in 1948 while running for president. His death sparked a wave of violent revolts known as the "Bogotazo" and, subsequently, a war in the countryside between liberals and conservatives.
