Infomoney - Democratic candidate Joe Biden said on Friday (22) that the United States should hold Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro accountable for the fires in the Amazon.

The statement was made in an interview with CNBC, which questioned Barack Obama's former vice president about his environmental policies.

“We should have a president who is talking to the president of Brazil right now, saying, ‘Look, stop burning the Amazon,’ which is the world’s largest carbon sink,” Biden declared.

In the interview, the candidate also promised to invest in renewable energy and promote a "rational policy" on global warming to create jobs.

Vice President of the United States between 2009 and 2017 and Senator for Delaware between 1973 and 2009, Biden is expected to be the opponent of Republican Donald Trump in the 2020 elections.

In the second half of last year, the escalation of fires in the Amazon attracted global attention and increased pressure from the international community on Brazil.

European Union leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have questioned signing the free trade agreement with Mercosur because of the wildfires. (ANSA)
