The Kremlin says Putin is ready to discuss peace in Ukraine.
But Moscow's main objective is to achieve its goals on Ukrainian territory, said spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Reuters - Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to move toward a peace deal for Ukraine, but Moscow's main objective is to achieve its own goals, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state television in a clip broadcast on Sunday.
Peskov said the world is already used to the sometimes "harsh" rhetoric of US President Donald Trump, but stressed that Trump had also highlighted in comments about Russia that he would continue to seek a peace agreement.
"President Putin has repeatedly spoken of his desire to bring the Ukrainian agreement to a peaceful conclusion as quickly as possible. This is a long process, which requires effort and is not easy," Peskov told reporter Pavel Zarubin of state television.
"The main thing for us is to achieve our goals. Our goals are clear," said Peskov.
On Monday, Trump announced a tougher stance toward Russia, promising a new wave of military aid to Ukraine, including Patriot anti-missile defense systems. He also gave Russia a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire or face additional sanctions.
