SEOUL (Reuters) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country will present a policy of jointly advancing nuclear weapons and conventional military power during his party's next congress, state media KCNA reported on Saturday (Friday in Brasília).

While inspecting weapons research centers on Thursday and Friday, Kim said that "the 9th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea will present the policy of simultaneously promoting the construction of nuclear forces and conventional armed forces in the field of national defense building," KCNA reported.

Kim also oversaw a live-fire exercise by the North Korean military on Friday and inspected the construction site of a hospital, KCNA reported.

Kim's flurry of domestic activities comes after his visit to Beijing earlier this month for a multilateral event and meetings with leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which have raised his international profile.

Meanwhile, a KCNA commentary harshly criticized a joint US-South Korean military simulation exercise scheduled for next week, calling it a "nuclear war exercise" and claiming it justifies North Korea's escalating nuclear posture.
