Trial for attempted assassination of Macron begins in France.

In France, the courts will have to decide whether a plan by a group of radical militants to assassinate President Emmanuel Macron actually constituted a threat to national security.

Sputnik - Thirteen members of the Barjols group, who planned to assassinate the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, begin to be tried this Tuesday (17), in Paris. The defense claims that the plan was only a sketch, an idea without any intention of being carried out.

The prosecution, on the other hand, wants to prove that there is no doubt that the organization tried to eliminate the president, since "those under investigation had several projects aimed at attacking the democratic foundations of our society."

The problem, according to the press, is that the organization's objectives were not perfectly clear, and nothing guarantees that the militants were in fact determined to carry out the attacks they planned. The process that begins this Tuesday (17) aims to determine "how far the Barjols were willing to put their plans into practice".

The Barjols militants have gained notoriety in France in recent years for their attacks against Muslim immigrants and mosques. In 2018, according to the French state intelligence agency, the group attempted to assassinate Emmanuel Macron.

The attack had been planned to take place during the centennial celebrations of the end of the First World War, with the head of state in attendance, in eastern France.

The organization operated primarily on social media, writes Radio France Internationale (RFI), adding that its members openly expressed hatred towards minorities.

The extremists were reportedly dissatisfied with French immigration policy, which they considered excessively lenient, and began focusing their plans on an attack against the president.

In addition to arresting members determined to carry out attacks, in recent years French police have also seized weapons and explosives from some members of the Barjols gang.
