Reuters Shinzo Abe was re-elected prime minister of Japan on Wednesday, following his ruling bloc's landslide victory in last month's election and days before a visit by US President Donald Trump that is expected to be dominated by concerns about volatile North Korea.

Abe, 63, took office in December 2012, promising to boost the country's ailing economy and strengthen its defense.

Abe's coalition, led by the Liberal Democratic Party, retained its two-thirds "supermajority" in the lower house of Parliament in the October 22 election, giving new impetus to its attempt to revise Japan's post-war pacifist Constitution.

It is believed that Abe will reappoint his current cabinet ministers and ask them to compile a supplementary budget for the fiscal year ending March 31, focusing on childcare and increasing productivity.
